Calaveras County Big Year (2026)

In the movie "The Big Year", Jack Black, Steve Martin, and Owen Wilson are obsessed birders trying to see as many birds as possible within the United States during one calendar year. While the premise seems ridiculous, many "hard-core" birders attempt a big year!

I am one of those birders, but instead of doing a big year across the whole country, I am focusing on my local area: Calaveras County in California. Calaveras is one of the least birded regions in the state, and I believe it has tons of untapped "bird potential"!

As part of this endeavor, I'm raising money for the Calaveras Big Trees Association, a non-profit that puts on educational content about the Giant Sequoias in Calaveras Big Trees State Park. I'm asking folks to commit to giving a certain amount per bird species I see. For example, if you commit to giving $0.10 per bird, and I see 200 unique bird species (my minimum goal) in Calaveras County during 2026, you would end up donating $20.00 to Calaveras Big Trees Association!

If you'd like to join, just fill out the form! Thank you in advance!
